A Stay at the Royal Palms Hotel
Bermuda
Less than a 3 hour flight from most eastern US cities sits 21 square miles of stunning beaches and colorful island culture. My first knowledge of this bucket list destination came from the popular Beach Boys song “Kokomo” which often leads to the misconception that it’s located in the Caribbean. The island is actually in the North Atlantic Ocean and is a British island territory. While there are many top rated resorts in Bermuda to choose from, the Royal Palms Hotel offers a Boutique experience that will take your island getaway to the next level.
History
The Royal Palms was originally built as a luxurious private home in 1903 and has undergone various changes over the years. In the 1940s, the home was converted to a guest house with 12 bedrooms. Fast forward to the 1990s when new ownership took over, expanding the number of rooms to 16 and later, a total of 32 rooms with the purchase of a neighboring property.
Overview
Today, guest can immerse themselves into the 19th century colonial charm while being just minutes away from downtown Hamilton, Pink sand beaches, & many of the island’s top attractions.
The Royal Palms grounds are absolutely gorgeous! The palm tree-lined lane as we drove up to the entrance transported me onto island time before I ever stepped foot out of our taxi. As the coral hued hotel came into view, I knew that our stay was going to be one to remember. The property is engulfed by tropical gardens, palm trees, and a formal courtyard. Brick pathways lead you throughout the tranquil grounds with various seating areas for your to enjoy or you can relax by the secluded pool.
Accommodations and Amenities
Our two room deluxe suite was located in the gardens. The separate sitting room was perfect for enjoying our complimentary breakfast and the bedroom housed a comfortable king size bed. The rooms were connected by a well equipped kitchenette. The suite included a shared porch open to the gardens with an outdoor dining table and lawn chairs just a few steps away. This style room could comfortably house 4 people with the use of the pull out couch in the sitting area. A variety of rooms are available – check them out here.
Dining and More
There are two restaurant options on property – the award winning Ascot’s Restaurant and a more casual option, Just 24. The hotel currently offers tables in their open air sunroom, gardens, and outdoor deck to help maintain the health and safety of their guest. Our three-course dinner experience at Ascot’s was great. I started with the appetizer special for the night – shrimp and sausage spring rolls and they were delicious. We enjoyed our meals, the service was superior, and the dessert platter we were surprised with when I couldn’t make a decision makes my mouth water every time I think about it. If there’s anything you’re going to take my word on, I promise I know my sweets!
Nearby Attractions
If you’re an avid traveler then it’s likely you like to experience both tourist attractions and local spots – here are some recommendations of my own & some that came to us from the amazing team at the Royal Palms:
Entertainment
- Crystal Cave and Fantasy Cave – Take a tour of both of these caves on the island. The underground pools and formations are a sight to see! Be sure to wear comfy shoes to help keep your footing on the stairs. There is a Cafe on-site for a quick snack or meal too.
- Gibb’s Hill Lighthouse – This 117 foot lighthouse offers incredible views of the islands at the top of its 185 step climb.
- Front Street – Waterfront promenade with stunning water views and colorful colonial buildings, including restaurants, retail shops, & more!
- Fantasea Watersports – Go kayaking, snorkeling, rum tasting, and so much more! I highly recommend you schedule a water activity for your trip to see the island from a different perspective!
